Data, Data Everwhere; Not an Adult to be Found

This Thursday the House of Representatives passed H.R.2221, the Data Accountability and Trust Act. This while multiple state Attorney Generals are cracking down on those involved with last month’s HIPAA violations and a new medical records breach is discovered; The lawsuit we mentioned last week continues against Computer-World for a whole string of insufficient PCI installations exposing restaurant customers Credit Card Data; Multiple University breaches of student records, a public school breach of student records, an Irish bank breach of UK customer data… And then there were all the high profile leaks at Yahoo!, HSBC, and the TSA. These fools can’t even handle the data they DO care about not getting out.


So along comes the House and passes the bill, completely watered down. The short of it is that the O.C.C. retains sole jurisdiction over all the financials and will continue to do very little, very slowly and quietly. The non-profits including education are also exempt. Medical records will probably be exempted to pass health care at this rate, so that leaves small business – the merchants. Maybe this WILL pass the Senate after all.
