U.S. enables Chinese hacking of Google
|
A GREAT article here quoting Bruce Schneier on how google shot themselves and anyone using gmail in the… foot? NO WONDER iDefense and ‘em all clammed up in a hurry. GOOGLE: STOP DOING EVIL THINGS! In order to comply with government search warrants on user data, Google created a backdoor access system into Gmail accounts. This feature is what the Chinese hackers exploited to gain access. Google's system isn't unique. Democratic governments around the world — in Sweden, Canada and the UK, for example — are rushing to pass laws giving their police new powers of Internet surveillance, in many cases requiring communications system providers to redesign products and services they sell. |

It’s funny – you can see when Google first started to react to this issue here: http://www.hackernews.com/2010/01/17/google-spanking-inspires-basic-basic-gmail-change/. So in those first 2 weeks of January, Google started hitting the lowest hanging fruits on the gmail security tree.
It makes me wonder – was this just a Phishing attack or was it the SSL client-initiated renegotiation bug?
Also, are “NSA backdoors” just bugs these days? Adding bugs as a covert way of installing a back door is not a new idea. In fact, I’ve personally run into bugs that seemed more like backdoors than mistakes.
