Job Description:
Enterprise Software Developer -
FreshBooks – Toronto, ON
FreshBooks is looking for an experienced Enterprise Software Developer to help build out our world-class invoicing platform.
Thousands of people use FreshBooks every day to manage their businesses — tracking time, billing and getting paid more easily and more reliably. Your role is to help us build out new features and scale our services to help support the steadily-growing base of users who rely on us. We provide high-availability, mission-critical services and our team is looking for someone with a background in such things to help us grow.
If building out super-reliable, high-performance applications in a disciplined, agile manner is what you love, drop us a line and let’s see if there’s a fit.
We NEED you to have:
* 5 years’ experience building enterprise-class applications
* 3 years’ experience working with ORMs and DAOs
* A demonstrable passion for unit testing, continuous integration and code coverage
* Communication skills like whoa
We HOPE you have:
* Experience with web applications
* Great refactoring mojo
How to apply
Without solid, inventive development, FreshBooks can’t keep leading the industry. If you’ve got a healthy skepticism towards buzzwords (like, uh, “Web 2.0″ and “Agile”) and big promises of how much fun you’re going to have, but still dream of working on what can legitimately be called The Next Big Thing http://www.freshbooks.com/blog/2009/08/14/the-globe-and-mail-features-freshbooks, pull your resume or your LinkedIn Profile together and contact us at careers@freshbooks.com.
If you want to prove you’re really paying attention, include a verse of ottava rima with your application and you’re guaranteed to have your application reviewed by our Software Development Manager.

Job Description:
Software Developer -
FreshBooks – Toronto, ON
Love the fast-paced and creative environment of a start-up, but could do without the stress and chaos? FreshBooks has been around for more than five years now and has a fanatical fan base of over 900,000 people who use our groundbreaking Web 2.0 application. Whatever “Web 2.0″ means. We need fresh-thinking, disciplined developers who don’t sneer at scripting languages but also know their enterprise-level design. In return, we supply a stable, creative environment (want a Mac? got Ubuntu? No problem!) with a competitive compensation package, and the sort of collaboration that comes out of just wanting to get things done, not from the latest IEEE-mandated “best practice”.
You will:
Join our development team in designing and developing our popular online application and the tools we use to run our business behind the scenes – you should be able to figure out what that entails. You’ll learn hands-on about our industry and our customers, and you’ll be figuring out how to make them happy, and then going ahead and doing it.
We need you to have:
* 3 years’ experience building online applications
* 2-3 years experience with object-oriented development
* Serious SQL chops
* Communication skills like whoa (you better be able to talk to customers on the phone (yes, we talk to our customers on the phone))
* Demonstrated fanatical attention to detail
* No desire to waste our time because you don’t actually have some of the qualities described above
We hope you have:
* Experience deploying and maintaining web server technology
* Familiarity with source control systems
* Experience with “Agile” development methodologies (whatever “Agile” means)

It’s a regular thing for us to decide we need specific help or for us to receive offers of help in areas we have no immediate need for. Hacker News Network is still at a stage where things are VERY tight. The burglary of Space Rogue’s car during his move took all the equipment we invested our own money in (ads and t-shirts only bring in enough for co-location and small expenses like that).

While Astaro’s sponsorship has inspired hope, our one step forward, two steps back start still leaves us hoping to find talent well matched to our needs, willing to “Work For Portfolio” (WFP).
What we CAN offer at this point is “affiliation” (video or website credits where appropriate) and a t-shirt and of course, if we successfully grow, you will be positioned not only with reference work, but as a preferred ‘vendor’ for the service you provide.
HNN has the following needs:
ON CAMERA: We are looking for “edgy cyber-rebel types” to read short editorial pieces and act as a regional field reporter (interviews). Ability to write your own material is not a requirement but certainly would make you stand out. You can be located anywhere – you just need a video camera (SD or HD – just better than a web or camera cam), and… charaaaaaaaasma. We are open to long term or one time arrangements.
We are also looking to build NYC and Boston based acting crews. Acting experience IS necessary, computer security knowledge is a plus but we have a variety of roles to fill. If you are already a crew from somewhere else, we’d like to hear from, and potentially use your crew as well.
Contact tan@hackernews.com with a few pics or an audition tape; or just to learn more.
GRAPHICS: We have a variety of graphics needs for our “sales collateral”, programming graphics, and for our website. Of particular interest are individuals that are into DEMO or animated graphics (tan can’t figure out how to ’select’ in Blender). Contact tan@hackernews.com to learn more.
WEBMASTER: WE ARE WORKING WITH A WEBMASTER NOW – LOOK FOR A NEW SITE DESIGN IN THE NEAR FUTURE!
WRITERS: Space Rogue and tan try to provide a “consumer reports” focus to their news reporting. We feel that even corporations are ultimately consumers and it is in everyone’s best interest to hold vendors to higher standards than most media which seem to be drowning in corporate sympathies. If you write well and have a consumer oriented view of the world – There are a number of ways to contribute.
- Sign up on www.hackernews.com and start posting BREAKING NEWS so we can see your stuff! If we’re impressed, you might eventually be invited to a writers call.
- Send a 3-8 minute script for an opinion piece to Space Rogue.
GENERAL: We have a lot of “do the dishes” stuff that ultimately cause quality to suffer somewhere – whether it’s a section of our website getting stale, or writing for HNNCast being rushed, or a new series stalled out… If you would like to maintain some content for HNN to receive credit as the maintainer, we are looking for reliable people for interested in one or more of the following:
- Field emails from recruiters and post them to our Classifieds (this section)
- Maintain our CONS calendar
SALES: We need both sales people and order takers in that we have a vision for how HNN can be funded and grow – but we both suck at sales. We need salespeople who can agree to a set of “targets” and “bring them in” for us as well as “order takers” who can follow up on the leads that have been coming in on their own. Due to the nature of sales, this is NOT WFP work. Contact tan@hackernews.com to discuss commissions.
REGIONAL OPERATIONS: HNN is considering doing “Behind the Firewall” episodes for not just cons, but also for cities with flourishing hacker culture. If you feel you can be our guide for one of these specials, contact tan@hackernews.com highlighting elements of (hacker) interest – like hacker spaces, publicly accessible facilities, events, etc. It might take some time for us to get to you but in the meanwhile, it increases our awareness when it comes time to scan the landscape for news each week.
Thanks for supporting us in whatever way you do – and please don’t hesitate to spread the word that we’re here.
The Plea from HFCWhat I need is for a small army of people to swarm the net in search of training courses (Office, Graphics packages, just about anything). We need to:
